In April, my brother, Quirk, and I (and whoever else wants to come to the barn wrecking party…Dedman and Ryanne are rumored to make an appearance) are going to Wreck & Salvage this barn. It’s right around 100 years old, parts of it are older. The hayloft has all hand-hewn beams salvaged from an earlier barn, probably dating pre-1900, and everything below is circular sawn and dates probably from the early 1900’s. We’re going to salvage what we can from this barn to use in the house we’re building this summer. Don’t know what to expect, don’t have too much experience dismantling barns, but I know I want the experience. I’m going to do my best to document the whole process, but it’s gonna be a tough juggle. The idea is to build as green as possible (whatever that means), salvaging materials (locally), trying to gather everything from within 100 mile radius of the site, milling timber from the site to use in the frame, and work with and meet local crafts and tradesmen (I meant to say people). I have little to no experience in tearing down barns, or building houses. It’s the whole point of all of this, to learn, to make the decisions about where and how I want to live, and in what. Enjoy.
Also, just throwing this out to the internet gods…is there anyone out there who might be interested in sponsoring video documentation of this insane process?
